I'm not sure I'm able to recall accurately if age experienced precedence in excess of gender or vice versa. There would obviously be exceptions, e.g. if anyone was sufficiently vital, they'd be preceded by a herald who would announce them; It could be very crystal clear which the herald was performing on behalf of the VIP, rather than on his person
